A soldier went into St. Francis Church in Volterra, near Florence, Italy, in search of valuables. He took an ivory box containing the Blessed Sacrament out of the Tabernacle and was leaving with it. Priests were in the Church but did not challenge him since he had a sword. He wanted to leave the Church but could not find the door. He became angry and started to curse and swear. Suddenly he became blind. He continued to curse and swear as he staggered around.
One of the priests said to him, “If you give back the box with the Blessed Sacrament, you might get your sight back.” He took the box and threw it with all his might against one of the columns of the Church. The moment the box hit the column there was an earthquake which shook the entire city.
The soldier fell to his knees and begged forgiveness. His eyesight was restored. The box was in pieces, but the Hosts were in perfect condition and were put back into the Tabernacle.
The documents describing this miracle are in the archives of St. Francis Church.
This miracle shows us:
Jesus keeps His promises that He would give us His Flesh to eat and His Blood to drink (John 6:48-59).
At every Mass, for the last 2,000 years, when the priest says the words of consecration (this is My Body and this is My Blood) the bread and wine are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity of Jesus Christ. All Christians believed this miracle happens at Mass for the first 1,500 years until the Protestant Reformation.
The red blood cells in fresh blood break down over time (24 to 48 hours) without refrigeration.
