Santarem is about half way between Fatima and Lisbon in Portugal. In 1247 in Santarem, there lived a couple who were not happy. The wife tried to better the marriage, but to no avail.
Finally, the wife went to a sorceress or witch for help. The sorceress told her to bring a consecrated Host to her for a love potion. The wife was afraid to do that at first, but eventually she went to St. Stevens Church, received Holy Communion and put the Host in a handkerchief.
As she made her way home, Blood began to drip from the Host in the handkerchief. She panicked; ran home; hid the Host in the bottom of a drawer. That night she and her husband were awakened by rays of light coming from the drawer. The wife had no choice except to tell her husband what she had done. They spent the night in adoration.
The priest was noticied, came and brought the Holy Communion back to the Church. The Host bled for 3 consecutive days. Putting the Host in a beeswax container, he placed it in the tabernacle.
In 1340 (almost a hundred years later) when a priest opened the tabernacle, he saw that the beeswax container was broken in pieces, and in its place was a crystal container with the Blood of the Host inside mixed with the wax.
The Blood, which is still in liquid form after almost 800 years, can be seen today in “The Church of the Miracle”, the Church of St. Stephen in Santarem along with the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano.
This miracle shows us:
Jesus keeps His promises that He would give us His Flesh to eat and His Blood to drink (John 6:48-59).
At every Mass, for the last 2,000 years, when the priest says the words of consecration (this is My Body and this is My Blood) the bread and wine are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity of Jesus Christ. All Christians believed this miracle happens at Mass for the first 1,500 years until the Protestant Reformation.
The red blood cells in fresh blood break down over time (24 to 48 hours) without refrigeration.
