Herkenrode Abbey is in Belgium. A Priest was called to go to see a sick person. For some reason he left his pouch with the Blessed Sacrament and Holy Oils on a table outside the room of the sick person, and he went in to hear the person’s confession.
Somebody came into the house, opened up the priest’s pouch and began to take the Host out of the pyx. The Host began to bleed, the person became frightened and ran away. The priest came out of the room and was about to give the sick person the Communion when he saw blood on the Hosts.
He took the Host to the Herkenrode Abbey and placed the Host on the altar. All the monks were there and testified that they saw a vision of the face of Christ on the Host, and He was crowned with thorns.
Over the centuries many reports of miracles and healings have taken place in the presence of the Miraculous Host, which can be seen today.
During the course of the centuries, many tests were done to ascertain the miraculous preservation of the consecrated Host from which Blood flowed. A test was done in the 18th century during a visit of the Archduchess Isabel. In the cathedral, there are also numerous paintings depicting the miracle, done Jan van Boeckhorst.
This miracle shows us:
Jesus keeps His promises that He would give us His Flesh to eat and His Blood to drink (John 6:48-59).
At every Mass, for the last 2,000 years, when the priest says the words of consecration (this is My Body and this is My Blood) the bread and wine are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity of Jesus Christ. All Christians believed this miracle happens at Mass for the first 1,500 years until the Protestant Reformation.
The red blood cells in fresh blood break down over time (24 to 48 hours) without refrigeration.
