The 11-year-old girl is Imelda Lambertini. She was delighted when her parents gave her permission to enter a Dominican convent at the age of 9. She wanted to receive Jesus in Holy Communion, but at that time one had to be 12 years old to receive.
May 12, 1333, came and Imelda was at Mass with the nuns. When Mass was over the nuns were leaving the Church, but Imelda was remaining to pray. They turned to call her to come with them but what they saw stopped them in their tracks. A bright white Host was suspended in the air above Imelda’s head. They called the priest, and when he saw what was happening, he placed the paten under the Host, and the Host descended onto the paten. The priest took this as a sign from Jesus that He wanted to go to Imelda, so he gave her, Her First Holy Communion. As soon as she received Holy Communion she went into ecstasy and never same out of it. She died that day.
Imelda has been declared “Blessed” by the Church, and her incorrupt body is in San Sigismondo Church which is close to the University of Bologna.
This miracle shows us:
Jesus keeps His promises that He would give us His Flesh to eat and His Blood to drink (John 6:48-59).
At every Mass, for the last 2,000 years, when the priest says the words of consecration (this is My Body and this is My Blood) the bread and wine are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity of Jesus Christ. All Christians believed this miracle happens at Mass for the first 1,500 years until the Protestant Reformation.
The red blood cells in fresh blood break down over time (24 to 48 hours) without refrigeration.
